The statue’s pose is from a photo taken by his son Cyril, who could not attend due to illness but won a Na Hoku Hanohano award earlier this month for his slack-key guitar album “Hi‘ilawe,” named for his father’s hit.

Firefighter Ocean Kaowili draped a lei on the statue of Pahinui. This is the 10th Anniversary of the Waikiki Beach Walk project on Lewers St. Pahinui is recognized as an important force in Hawaiian music.
