Honolulu Ocean Safety lifeguards rescued 11 people in separate incidents Saturday at Spitting Caves in Portlock and near Pokai Bay in Waianae.
Both incidents involved people requiring rescue after attempting to help others.
Around 4 p.m., a 19-year-old man jumped off the cliff at Spitting Caves and was unable to handle the ocean conditions. Four fellow military service members jumped in to help and were assisted by a sixth man. All were brought safely to shore on rescue watercraft by lifeguards, Honolulu Emergency Services Division spokeswoman Shayne Enright said.
A half-hour later, a boy was swept away near the tide pools off Glenmonger Street in Waianae and four adults entered the water to try to rescue him. All were rescued by lifeguards on watercraft.
No injuries were reported in either incident.
East shores were experiencing wave heights of up to 10 feet during the day, with a high-surf advisory in effect until 6 p.m. today.
Ocean Safety officials advised beachgoers to keep a close watch on small children along the shore, watch for wet rocks (which are an indicator of surf breaking on ledges), swim where lifeguards are on duty, and carry a mobile phone when kayaking or boating.
Makakilo boy shot in head with nail gun
A 12-year-old boy was taken in serious condition to a hospital Saturday after his father accidentally shot him in the forehead with a nail gun.
The incident happened about 2:20 p.m. in Makakilo, police said.
Firefighters also responded to the incident on Kohea Place after a caller reported a juvenile male with a head injury from a 3-inch nail, Honolulu Fire Capt. Kevin Mokulehua said.
Firefighters arrived to find the boy calm and on the roof of a house. Firefighters provided the boy with medical care, and brought him down to waiting paramedics, Mokulehua said.
He said the boy’s mother told firefighters the boy was holding a board to be nailed when the nail went through the board and struck him above his eye, near the bridge of his nose.
Alcohol suspected in hit-and-run accident
Alcohol appears to be a factor in a hit-and-run crash that left a moped rider in critical condition Saturday morning in the Ala Moana area, police said.
A 32-year-old Honolulu man was riding a moped Diamond Head-bound on Kapiolani Boulevard at about 12:05 a.m. when a 46-year-old man made a left turn onto Atkinson Drive, directly in the path of the moped driver, police said.
The moped driver struck the 2009 Volkswagen car and was thrown onto the roadway, police said. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition.
The driver of the car, a Salt Lake man, fled and was later arrested.
