The four-team field of Hawaii basketball’s season-opening Rainbow Classic has been revealed.
UH will play against Troy, North Dakota and Arkansas-Pine Bluff in an order to be announced later over Nov. 10-13. The round-robin field was announced by Troy in its schedule release. UH has yet to release its 2017-18 schedule.
Troy (22-15) of the Sun Belt and UND (22-10) of the Big Sky are coming off 15-seed appearances in the NCAA Tournament. Pine Bluff of the SWAC went 7-25. Hawaii was 14-16.
UH hosted the Troy Trojans last Nov. 25 and lost 65-63, then played UAPB two days later, beating the Golden Lions 64-44. This season will be the sixth time in eight years the Lions have visited Manoa, including the fourth straight year.
UH hosted North Dakota on Nov. 20, 2012 and beat it 71-66 back when UND was without an official nickname. Now its teams are known as the Fighting Hawks.
Of 351 teams in the final NCAA RPI calculation last year, North Dakota was 133rd, Troy was 150th, Hawaii was 300th and Pine Bluff was 345th.
Other known games on the schedule are Nevada on Nov. 24, at Utah on Dec. 2, and Miami on Dec. 22.
Mililani KC reaches 12/70 championship
Evan “Paa” Elarionoff hit a walk-off grand slam with two outs in the sixth inning to boost Mililani KC over Troy (N.Y.) in a 4-2 semifinal win at the 12/70 Cal Ripken World Series in Branson, Mo., on Tuesday.
Zarin Po’opa’a pitched the first four innings for Mililani, while Zechariah Takahashi earned the win pitching two shutout innings to close the game. Mililani KC advances to today’s U.S. Championship game against Atlantic Beach, Fla.
Pearl City dominates in Cal Ripken 10U
Zyon Faleiva and Shaveh Sarono combined to throw a two-hit shutout as Pearl City KRU defeated St. John (Ind.) 13-0 in four innings on Tuesday at the Cal Ripken 10U World Series in Hammond, Ind.
Noah Bernal and Jace Noda finished with three hits and three runs each. KRU (3-0) will face Willamette Valley, Ore., in the final pool-play game today.
Galdiano tied for 11th at Women’s Amateur
Pearl City’s Mariel Galdiano shot a 3-under-par 69 in the second round of the U.S. Women’s Amateur on Tuesday in Chula Vista, Calif. Galdiano is tied for 11th with an overall score of 143.
Kahului’s Kimberlie Miyamoto finished at 153 and failed to make the cut, as did Wailuku’s Jasmine Cabajar (154), and Pearl City’s Brittany Fan (157).
France’s Shannon Aubert holds a four-stroke lead at 135.
’77 hoops, Miyashiro to join Hall of Fame
The University of Hawaii at Hilo’s 1976-77 men’s basketball team and volunteer Dennis Miyashiro will represent the 20th class to be inducted into the Vulcan Athletic Hall of Fame this fall. Coach Jimmy Yagi’s squad upset NCAA Division I teams, won an NAIA District championship and went to the NAIA national tournament in their first year of four-year college competition.
Miyashiro has donated his time and service to UHH athletics since the 1970s. He has served as the President of the Vulcan Booster Club and continues to fundraise for the men’s golf program.
The ceremony will be at 5 p.m. on Oct. 21 at the Campus Center Dining Hall, followed by a women’s volleyball match against Chaminade at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $75.
Hilo softball team finishes pool play in Ohio
Hilo’s Nobu Yamauchi softball team split a pair of games in pool play of the RBI World Series in Cincinnati on Tuesday. Nobu Yamauchi defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 4-2 for their first win of the tournament, and fell 5-4 to the Houston Astros in the nightcap.
Makena Wagner went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a run in the win, while Brooke Baptiste and Shaily Moses posted two hits each in the loss.
