Actor/producer Brian Yang, a member of the “Hawaii Five-0” cast from 2011 and 2015, is bringing the independent drama “I Can I Will I Did” to Honolulu for a one-night screening on Monday.
The independent film was written and directed by Nadine Truong and produced by Yang, a co-producer of 2013 documentary “Linsanity,” which chronicled the basketball career of Jeremy Lin. The filmmakers, who are married, will appear for a Q&A at the film screening, set for 7:30 p.m. at Consolidated’s Kahala 8.
Mike Faist, a Tony Award nominee for his role as Connor Murphy in Broadway musical “Dear Evan Hansen,” plays Ben, a wayward teen who finds redemption through taekwondo after being bullied to near death. Grandmaster Ik Jo Kang, who conceived the story, plays himself in his acting debut.
“Hawaii has long felt like a home away from home for me and after spending significant time there for many years working on ‘Five-0,’ I know there is a film-appreciating audience on the islands,” Yang said. “I think people will really like this one because it’s heartwarming and something that’s really for everyone. It’s a family film.”
“I Can I Will I Did” won the Audience Choice Award after a sold-out screening last month at the Asian American International Film Festival in New York.
Discounted $10 tickets to Monday’s screening are available from the filmmakers and at the door. Email info@408films.com for advance tickets.
