Twenty-two year old Nikki Van Dijk won the Cascais Women’s Pro title on Wednesday in Cascais, Portugal.
Van Dijk edged Oahu’s Carissa Moore — a three-time world champion — 10.67 to 10.10 in the final of the World Surf League championship tour event.
Van Dijk, from Victoria, Australia, became the first surfer from her hometown to win a WSL championship tour event since Tony Ray won the Lacanau Pro in 1992.
In the Billabong Pro Cascais men’s championship tour event, Hawaii’s Ezekiel Lau won his quarterfinal heat to move into the semifinals. He faces Portugal’s Frederico Morais when surf resumes today, conditions permitting. Italo Ferreira of Brazil and Kanoa Igarashi of Huntington Beach, Calif., are in the other semifinal matchup.
