A 60-year-old male visitor drowned Thursday afternoon while swimming in waters off Anini Beach on Kauai’s north shore, according to a report from the Kauai Police Department.
Police have identified him as Douglas Hoskins of Washington.
Hoskins was reported to have been swimming about 100 yards from shore when he became distressed and yelled for help. Two bystanders went out to Hoskins on stand-up paddleboards but discovered him unresponsive. They brought him to shore and began administering CPR.
Rescuers responded to a 3:50 p.m. call of a man needing medical assistance at Anini Beach, on the north end of the park’s camping site. Medics continued resuscitation efforts but Hoskins could not be revived. He was transported to Mahelona Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He was then brought to Wilcox Morgue, where an autopsy is pending.
Volunteers with Life’s Bridges, a grief counseling service, are assisting Hoskins’ family.
This is Kauai’s third drowning of 2018.
