Coconut Island in Hilo will be closed today to clean up debris left behind by Hurricane Lane, according to a statement from the Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation. Parks crews are working to remove storm debris from all parks and recreational facilities that were affected, the department said.

Kauai

Placard deadline extended

Kauai County is extending its placard exchange deadline for residents of Wai­niha and Haena to Sept. 24. A road checkpoint has been in place in those areas since heavy rain and flooding damaged roads in April, and only those with valid placards have been allowed through. To combat a rash of placard thefts and attempts at unauthorized access, the county began exchanging the placards for window decals in August. After the Sept. 24 deadline, only those with valid window decals will be allowed through.

The Planning Department office in Lihue will be doing placard exchanges from 9 a.m. to noon today, Monday, Sept. 21 and Sept. 24.

Maui

Trash collection rescheduled

Residential trash collection routes that were canceled Wednesday due to Tropical Storm Olivia have been rescheduled, according to a statement from the Maui County Department of Environmental Management’s Solid Waste Division.

Trash will be picked up today for residents of Hana, Molokai and Lanai. For the rest of Maui, trash will be picked up Saturday. Residents of manual routes are asked to place no more than six containers of trash at the curb.

Due to the closure of Lower Honoapii­lani Road between Hui Road and Puamana Place, trash pickup in that area will not resume until the road is reopened, possibly on Sept. 21. Area residents are asked to drop off their trash at the Olo­walu Transfer Station, 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
