Senior forward Erik Scheive scored a game-high 25 points, but it was not enough as 12th-ranked Chaminade saw its undefeated season end with a loss to Fresno Pacific in PacWest men’s basketball Monday, 74-72, at the Special Events Center in Fresno, Calif.
Senior guard Nicholas Anderson added 13 points for the Silverswords (10-1, 4-1 PacWest) who came within one game of the program’s best start (11-0 in 1978-79). Chaminade defeated the Sunbirds (5-6, 2-4) 93-86 in overtime at McCabe Gym on Nov. 29 to open conference play.
The Silverswords continue their first road trip of the year at Academy of Art in San Francisco on Wednesday.
>> At San Francisco, junior forward Ronald Blain scored 23 points and junior guard Neema Namdar added 17, but Hawaii Pacific was done in by a lack of rebounding in falling to Academy of Art.
The Sharks (4-6, 1-4) lost the battle of the boards 36-18, with the Urban Knights (2-8, 2-3) scoring 58 points in the paint. HPU hit 13 3-pointers, with Namdar going 5-for-5.
>> At San Rafael, Calif., Hawaii Hilo overcame injuries to three top players, forcing 38 turnovers and routing Dominican 75-54 at the Conlan Center.
In 14 minutes of play, senior guard Deven Johnson scored 19 points, 17 in the first half, before going down with an injury early in the second half. Junior guard Kupaa Harrison (Kalaheo) added 15 points for the Vulcans (4-5, 2-3) against the Penguins (5-7, 1-5).
HPU rolls over Academy of Art
Freshman guard Lauren Hippolite made her Hawaii Pacific debut a success, scoring 22 points, including five 3-pointers, in a 104-64 rout of Academy of Art in a PacWest women’s basketball game on Monday in San Francisco.
Freshman guard Abbey Noblett added 20 points, and senior guard Samantha Lambrigtsen had 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Sharks (7-4, 5-0 PacWest) in their sixth straight win. HPU led 18-6 after the first quarter and 52-19 at halftime against the Urban Knights (1-7, 0-5).
>> At Fresno, Calif., junior guard Diamond Carter came up one rebound shy of a double-double and Chaminade came up short against Fresno Pacific 72-62.
Carter (Kapolei) finished with 20 points and nine rebounds and junior guard Destiny Castro also had 20 points for the Silverswords (2-7, 1-4 PacWest), playing for the first time in 15 days. Senior forward Hunter Liftee (Honoka’a) added 13 points for Chaminade, which continues its first road trip of the season at Academy of Art on Wednesday in San Francisco.
The Sunbirds improved to 9-3 and 5-1.
>> At San Rafael, Calif., senior guard Alyssa Movchan scored 14 points but didn’t get much help as Hawaii Hilo fell to Dominican 94-46.
The Vulcans (4-5, 1-4) trailed 29-11 after the first quarter in their first game on the mainland. The Penguins (8-2, 5-1) were led by reigning conference player of the year Natalie Diaz, who scored 30 points.
