The Hawaii Hilo softball team opened its season by splitting a pair of games and Hawaii Pacific won its lone game as both teams opened their seasons Friday at the Desert Stinger Softball Tournament in Las Vegas.
In Hilo’s first game, Markie Okamoto drove in three runs and Kiarra Lincoln had two RBIs in the Vulcans’ 7-3 victory over Sonoma State.
Valerie Alvarado allowed three runs over 51⁄3 innings and Leah Gonzales worked the final 12⁄3 for the save.
In the second game, Central Washington scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning to beat Hawaii Hilo 3-1.
Lincoln singled in Maria Steadmon in the bottom of the inning for the Vulcans.
The international tiebreaker rule, which placed a runner at second base with no outs to start the inning, went into effect for both teams in the eighth.
Isabelle Mejia, Leah Gonzales and Billi Derleth combined on a five-hitter for Hawaii Hilo.
Lexie Strasser pitched a four-hitter for the Wildcats.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Tritons loaded the bases with two outs, but Curry got a groundout to end it.
Hilo men take down Azusa Pacific
Larry Bush scored 14 points and Denhym Brooke and Cleo Cain each added 11 as the Hawaii Hilo men’s basketball team beat Azusa Pacific 64-60 on Thursday at UHH gym.
James Griffin added eight assists and four steals for the Vulcans (9-8, 7-6 PacWest).
Selom Mawugbe scored 21 points for the Cougars (14-9, 11-5).

Malia Lee grabbed 11 rebounds for the Vulcans (5-12, 2-11 PacWest).
Savanna Hanson scored 23 points for the Cougars (18-4, 15-1).
UH women’s water polo suffers first loss
The No. 5 University of Hawaii water polo team lost to No. 3 UCLA 12-8 on Friday in Los Angeles.
Elyse Lemay-Lavoie and Alba Bonamusa Boix both scored two goals for the Rainbow Wahine (4-1).
Maddie Mussleman finished with five goals for the Bruins (8-0).
