A police car is stationed near a brush fire in Ewa that burned to within 100 feet of homes Tuesday night.

About 50 acres of brush burned and fire came within 100 feet of Ewa By Gentry homes Tuesday night.

Firefighters continued to put out hot spots this morning and investigators were to return to the scene to try and determine the cause of the blaze.

The fire began about 9:30 p.m. in a large vacant field at the north end of Keaunui Drive near the Thomas H. Gentry Community Center.

Flames got to within about 100 feet of homes, and as close as 50 feet from a Gentry construction yard next to the community center, said Capt. Terry Seelig, Honolulu Fire Department spokesman.

Strong winds blew the fire west toward the Fort Weaver Road end of the field as residents of homes closest to the field hosed down their lawns and roofs.

Honolulu police shut down Fort Weaver Road, Ewa’s main thoroughfare, between Renton Road and Kolowaka Drive as fire trucks arrived on scene.

The fire appeared to be brought under control in about 30-45 minutes and completely extinguished by midnight.

Both sides of For Weaver Road reopened by about 11:30 p.m.
