Parolee rams cars trying to escape police
A 32-year-old parolee with outstanding warrants panicked when she saw a patrol car in Kalihi near the Kapalama Shopping Center on Thursday morning, fled and ending up ramming several cars.
Police said the suspect was driving a car with three occupants, including two children, when she tried to avoid a police car. The suspect ended up by the Zippy’s restaurant near Kapalama Stream, which was blocked by cars.
The woman rammed several cars in trying to avoid police.
She was later stopped and arrested on suspicion of several counts of criminal property damage, two counts of endangering the welfare or minors and a parole violation.
Pedestrian killed in Waimanalo identified
Medical examiners have identified the pedestrian fatally injured as she was walking along Kalanianaole Highway in Waimanalo early Thursday morning as Cecelia Paul.
Paul, 35, was homeless. Police said she was struck by a vehicle traveling east on Kalanianaole near the Waimanalo Jack in the Box and Poalima Street at about 1:05 a.m. She was not in a marked crosswalk.
Paul was taken in critical condition to the Queen’s Medical Center, where she died.
Incident prompts brief lockdown of schools
Schools in the Waimea area on Hawaii island were locked down Friday morning after a student reported that a man approached a 10-year-old Waimea Elementary School boy.
Police said they were informed of the suspicious incident at 7:56 a.m., but the lockdown was lifted at 8:35 a.m. after the boy informed officials that the man was his relative and they were playing.
The school, with 564 students, was placed in lockdown while police investigated the incident and searched the campus at 67-1225 Mamalahoa Ave. Patti Cook, community liaison for Waimea Middle Public Conversion Charter School, said that besides Waimea Elementary School, whose facilities are adjacent to her campus, Kanu o ka ‘Aina Charter School, the Kamehameha Schools Preschool and a nearby Montessori school were also affected.
Hawaii island man charged in son’s death
The father of a 3-year-old boy who died after falling out of a pickup truck has been charged with manslaughter and other offenses related to the incident.
Pedro Peter, 38, of Kailua-Kona, apparently unaware that his son was no longer in the truck, reportedly ran over his son while pulling onto a highway shoulder leading to a store’s driveway on Wednesday, according to police.
Peter was charged Friday with manslaughter, four counts of not having a child restraint, three counts of endangering the welfare of a minor, and single counts of not having an operator’s license and not having no-fault insurance. As of Friday night he was still in custody at the Kona police cellblock in lieu of $52,125 bail. He is scheduled to appear in court Monday.
