Hunter safe on Lanai after being reported overdue


A hunter is safe and in good condition after being reported overdue Sunday on Lanai.

A Maui County release said an engine crew, rescue crew and the Air 1 helicopter responded to the 4 p.m. report of a hunter overdue in the Mahana hunting area 4 miles west of Lanai City.

The hunter was to have met the rest of his party at noon , but did not show up.

While crews were searching by ground and air, the 51-year-old man walked out on his own at 5:08 p.m.

The hunter said he was not aware that people were looking for him.
