A 20-year-old man was shot during an altercation Sunday at Ala Moana Center and was hospitalized in critical condition, according to police.
The victim and his friends got into an argument with the shooting suspect and his friends in the parking structure of the shopping center at about 7:30 p.m., according to an email from CrimeStoppers.
The argument escalated, and the suspect, also a 20-year-old man, retrieved a firearm from his vehicle and shot the victim, police said.
The suspect and his friends fled the scene before the arrival of police. Emergency Medical Services took the victim to a nearby hospital.
Police opened an attempted-murder case. The suspect remained at large Monday.
Residents escape harm in morning blaze
Honolulu firefighters extinguished a two-alarm townhouse fire early Sunday morning in Kapolei, allowing residents to return to their homes.
About 50 firefighters responded to the fire just after 1 a.m. on the 91-1040 block of Kaiau Avenue and found smoke and flames coming from a shed under an exterior stairwell, said Fire Capt. Michael Jones.
Firefighters used foam to bring the fire under control within one minute of their arrival, and canceled second-alarm units. The fire was extinguished by 1:23 a.m.
Jones said the occupants of the two-story, multi-unit town home were alerted to the fire by neighbors and the odor of smoke, and all escaped without injuries. They were able to return to their homes after the fire was extinguished.
Damage was estimated at $5,000 to the exterior of the structure. Firefighters could not determine a cause.
Helicopter crew rescues injured hiker
Fire rescue crews Monday aided a female hiker who injured her leg in Nuuanu.
Firefighters, including the Air 1 helicopter, responded to the call at 3:37 p.m. at Moole Valley Falls Trail, said Kevin Mokulehua, the department’s acting public information officer.
The woman, in her 20s, was airlifted to a nearby landing zone at the Board of Water Supply pumping station, where at 4:50 p.m. she was transferred to an ambulance.
Her hiking companions were able to get down the trail on their own.
