Hawaii junior Chloe Barr scored four goals and the fifth-ranked Rainbow Wahine water polo team opened the season with a 14-9 win over No. 10 Pacific on Friday in the UC Santa Barbara Winter Invitational.
Senior Nikki-Marie Bell and junior Claire Nixon added two goals each and the Wahine got one goal from senior Gabi Mantellato, sophomores Julia Barton, Femke Aan and Carla Abellan and freshmen Samantha Malouff and Maartje Keuning. UH goalie Ymane Hage made seven saves.
UH faces Marist and No. 11 UC San Diego today and closes the season’s opening weekend against No. 15 Indiana and No. 2 USC on Sunday.
UH finished last season ranked seventh in the Collegiate Water Polo Association poll and tied for fifth with Arizona State in this year’s preseason poll.
Mamiya, McDougall take junior surf meet
Barron Mamiya and Zoe McDougall took advantage of home waters to win their respective divisions of Friday’s Sunset Pro Junior, a World Surf League junior qualifying series event, at Sunset Beach.
It was Mamiya’s debut in the series and McDougall’s second win adding to last year’s victory in South Africa.
The 16-year-old Mamiya bested a stacked final that included Hawaii’s Finn McGill and Cody Young, and Tahiti’s Kauli Vaast. McGill finished second, Vaast third and Young fourth.
The 17-year-old McDougall dominated the all-Hawaii final, turning in a 5.76. Brisa Hennessy placed second, Summer Ivy third and Gabriela Bryan fourth.
There are two days remaining in the Sunset Open Men’s QS-1,000 event and contest organizers will decide this morning whether competition resumes today. Among those still competing are top seeds Billy Kemper, Sunny Garcia and McGill.
Silverswords sign goalie Stafford
Goalkeeper Michael Stafford, who helped lead Kalani to a state championship in 2014, has signed to play soccer for Chaminade this fall.
Stafford played the last two seasons at Iowa Western Community College, and the Reivers won conference, region and district championships this past season. He was the Honolulu Star-Advertiser state player of the year as a senior, helping the Falcons upset top-seeded Punahou in the state final.
Kanaka Ikaika racing season continues
The Kialoa to Kaimana race, the second of the Kanaka Ikaika Island Air Ocean Racing Series, is Sunday from Maunalua Bay to Kaimana Beach.
Both the long and short courses are 8 miles, with competition in prone paddleboard, SUP, surfski, OC-1, OC-2, OC-3, OC-6 and V-1. Registration and late entry is from 7 to 9 a.m., with the long course starting at 10 a.m. and short course at 10:05.
