Damian Telles shot 3-under-par 69 on Saturday to catch TJ Kua for the third-round lead in the Mid-Pacific Open.

Telles and Kua, who shot a 1-over 73, will open today’s final round at Mid-Pacific Country Club in Lanikai tied for the overall lead at 12 under. Jared Sawada is two shots behind the leaders after a round of even-par 72. Brent Grant shot a 2-under 70 on Saturday to move to 9 under.

Telles started on the 10th hole, eagled the par-5 16th to move to 10 under and went 2 under on the front side. Kua, the 2013 champion, went 41 holes before posting his first bogey of the tournament on No. 15 and had two more before the turn. He played the front at even par to keep a share of the lead.

Tyler Ota leads the amateurs in the championship flight at 3 under after carding a third straight round of 1-under 71. Mid-Pacific Institute senior Zachary Kaneshiro is two shots back after a 75.

David Ishii leads the senior pro division at 3 under, three shots ahead of Kevin Hayashi.

Trapasso, Becker to speak at QB Club

Hawaii head baseball coach Mike Trapasso and retired Star-Bulletin columnist Jim Becker will be the featured speakers at Monday’s Honolulu Quarterback Club meeting.

Trapasso, in his 15th year at the helm for the Rainbow Warriors, will talk about the success of his team this season.

Becker will be speaking about the journey of Ralph Carhart, who started the “Hall Ball Project’ in 2010, as well as the day Jackie Robinson entered Major League Baseball.

The Honolulu Quarterback Club meets at the Maple Garden Restaurant. Lunch is at 11:30 a.m. The program begins at noon.

HPU splits with Dixie State

Mitchell Bumann hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth to lead Hawaii Pacific (17-27, 7-25 PacWest) to a 2-1 win over No. 13 Dixie State in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday at Hans L’Orange Park.

The Trailblazers (30-10, 19-7) took the opener 11-4.

Seasiders, Vulcans split doubleheader

BYU-Hawaii and Hawaii-Hilo split a doubleheader on Saturday at Sand Island Park.

The Vulcans (24-20, 15-13 PacWest) took the opener 6-0, led by pitcher Cyanne Fernandez’s shutout.

The Seasiders (11-27, 8-18) bounced back in the second game, winning 3-2. Alanna Anderson led the way, going 3-for-3 with two RBIs.
