A lantern was placed at the Nagasaki Peace Bell memorial Wednesday during the Eighth Annual Peace Walk at the Frank F. Fasi Civic Grounds in Honolulu. The walk was put on by multiple faith groups to remember the victims of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki, Japan, on Aug. 9, 1945, and to promote peace and unity.

The Rev. Takamasa Yamamura of the Honolulu Myohoji Buddhist Temple, sang at the 28th Annual Hiroshima Peace Ceremony Monday at the Hiroshima Peace Bell on North Kukui Street. The event commemorates the detonation by the U.S. of an atomic bomb over Hiroshima, Japan, on Aug. 6, 1945. A second bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, Japan, three days later, forcing the Japanese surrender in World War II.

Starting in 1940, the festival is Hawaii's longest running, annually presented non-competitive hula event - with today's presentation featuring performances by Halau Hula o Nawahine, Puanani Alama Hula Studio, Halau Hula o Pua 'A'ala Hone and Hula Hui o Kapunahala and the 2017 Lei Queen and court.

Artist Susan Miyachi found a spot among some Rainbow Shower Trees in a corner of Kapiolani Park to put on canvas a scene with those trees and Diamond Head, using oils over acrylic paint, capturing the end of the season colors when the trees go from a "pinkish red" to yellow. Miyachi's works can be seen at the Haleiwa Art Gallery.
