A male pedestrian was critically injured early Saturday morning after he was struck by a passing vehicle while trying to cross Kamehameha Highway in Kalihi.

The incident occurred around 2:15 a.m. near Ahua Street.

Police said the man was in the vicinity of a marked crosswalk but did not have the right of way when he was struck by a westbound vehicle operated by a 33-year-old man.

Speed and alcohol were not factors in the incident, according to police. The man was transported in critical condition to an area hospital.

Man arrested for allegedly assaulting officer

A 33-year-old man faces a potential felony charge after he allegedly assaulted a police officer early Saturday while being processed for an unrelated arrest.

The incident occurred at the Kapolei police station around 2:40 a.m.

The suspect was being processed for his arrest on suspicion of operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant, excessive speeding and a protective order violation when he allegedly attacked the officer. He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of first-degree assault on a law enforcement officer, a class-C felony.

Firefighters battling brush fire in Ewa Beach

Honolulu firefighters battled a 10-acre brush fire in Ewa Beach on Saturday. The blaze was reported at 12:26 p.m. behind Asing Community Park off of Renton Road. The Honolulu Fire Department dispatched 15 units staffed by 43 personnel to fight the fire. No injuries were reported and no structures were threatened. The fire had yet to be brought under control as of 7:40 p.m. Saturday.
