Community leaders to discuss cyberbullying

Community leaders are gathering to discuss topics including cyberbullying, bullying against gay youths and strategies to prevent bullying.

Mental Health America of Hawaii planned the session for June 29 at Central Union Church in Honolulu.

The organization says 1 in 10 children have been victims of cyberbullying, and they’re nearly three times as likely to attempt suicide.

More than half of Hawaii public high school students and 63 percent of middle school students reported that harassment and bullying are problems at their schools.

Discussions will focus on how bullying affects the victim, how common it is, what bystanders can do and what kinds of laws can help stop it.

Speakers include lawmakers, educators, experts on suicide prevention and advocates against youth violence.
