Firefighters respond to 2 swimmers in distress off Kona

Hawaii County firefighters responded Friday to two swimmers in distress in separate incidents off the Kona coast due to high surf from the building southwest swell.

The first incident happened offshore of the Outrigger Kanaloa at 9:20 a.m. involving a man in his 60s, according to the Hawaii Fire Department.

The second incident happened at Kahuluu Beach Park at 2:46 p.m. involving a 61-year-old man.

CPR was performed on both victims and they were taken to Kona Community Hospital for continued treatment, according to fire officials.

The National Weather Service has issued a high surf advisory for the south-facing shores of all islands until 6 a.m. Sunday.

Surf is expected to be 4 to 8 feet along the south shores.

Ocean Safety officials is asking beachgoers and swimmers to exercise caution when entering the water.
