The 38-year-old Kauai man known as the “Jesus Bandit” will be arraigned in Honolulu Circuit Court Thursday on a charge of escaping from the Hawaii State Hospital last week.

Richard Leibman, who escaped from the Kaneohe mental hospital at about 6:40 p.m. Saturday by walking out of an unlocked door, was taken into custody by police at 1:48 a.m. Tuesday on Kalia Road near the Halekulani Hotel in Waikiki.

Leibman is being held at Oahu Community Correctional Center.

Leibman bolted Saturday through an unlocked door while workers were moving another patient.

Hospital staff chased the suspect, but lost in him the heavy brush near the Windward Oahu hospital.

Leibman has convictions for misdemeanor theft, assaulting police officers, resisting arrest and criminal contempt.

Leibman has a history of escapes. In December 2014, Leibman escaped from an Ewa Beach mental health facility and was located on Kauai in February 14, 2015. Kauai police said he tried to evade officers by climbing a wall, kicking several officers several times.
