Man’s body recovered off Point Panic

Three Kakakaako Waterfront Park users found the body of a man this morning and brought him ashore to the park at Point Panic, a fire department spokesman said.

However, authorities did not know if he was the man whom witnesses said left his car in a parking lot at Point Panic at 1 this morning and jumped into the ocean.

The incident was reported to police about 1 a.m. and the fire department searched for about 90 minutes before turning over the nighttime search to the Coast Guard.

Fisherman and a security guard at Point Panic saw a man run towards the water at about 1 a.m. and heard what sounded like an object hitting the water.

A 25-foot boat from Coast Guard Station Honolulu and a helicopter searched the waters and shoreline through the night. The Honolulu Fire Department helicopter and a rescue boat re-joined the search at first light this morning and searched the area until 7:30 a.m.

State deputy sheriffs who were in the area assisting with the search was summoned by the park users at 11 a.m. after they retrieved the body from the water.

The body was taken to the medical examiner’s office.
