Police closed off Kaonohi Street in Aiea Tuesday night to investigate a motorcycle crash that sent an Aiea man to the hospital in critical condition.

A motorcyclist was in critical condition at the Queen’s Medical Center following an accident Tuesday afternoon in Aiea.

Police said a 43-year-old Aiea man driving a  blue 2001 Yamaha R-1 motorcycle crashed into a black 2001 Volkswagen Golf sedan making a u-turn on Kaonohi Street near Hilo Place at 5:32 p.m. Tuesday.

The motorcycle was heading makai on Kaonohi Street when the Volkswagen, driven by a 30-year-old Aiea man, turned into its path, police said.

The motorcyclist was ejected from his Yamaha and suffered massive head injuries, police said. He was not wearing a helmet.

Investigators believe speed may be a factor in the crash. A light rain was falling at the time of the accident.
