Selling one product can be risky — either it’s a hit or miss. With Menehune / Hawaii Water Co., it’s a hit. The locally owned and operated purified bottle water company has managed to take one of its products and build a legacy of quality and innovation, bringing the best purified water to homes and businesses for nearly three decades.
Opening its doors in 1985 under president Ken Simon, the company has since grown to become Hawaii’s largest distributor of bottled water in the state, serving both residential and commercial markets on six of the Hawaiian Islands, the Mainland, the Far East and the South Pacific. Menehune Water Co. utilizes an eight-step process from a pristine source in the Koolau Mountains.
“A large part of our success comes from the vision and leadership of Ken Simon and his core management staff, most of whom have been with the company from the start,” said marketing director Joe Hartzman, who has more than 26 years with the company. With high-quality control and an innovative award-winning bottle design, Menehune / Hawaii Water Co. continues to be the leader in the water industry in Hawaii.
Menehune Water is also an advocate for the environment. All of the company’s tractors and delivery trucks are Diesel-fueled, and three other vehicles are electric. The entire roof of the company’s main manufacturing plant contains a PV solar system used in the purification process, reducing the use of electricity. Menehune Water also takes part in recycling, receiving their own old 5 gallon bottles and sending them to be made into reusable matter.
What sets Menehune Water apart from its competitors is that they do not focus on much advertising. They sponsor more than 75 community events throughout the year, and rely on word of mouth referrals. “Our consumers have come to know our quality of product and quality of service,” explained Hartzman. Their referral reward program also helps reduce the cost of the water for families on a budget.
Furthermore, the company has recently launched a consumer-friendly 3-gallon bottle with a handle. The bottle is made to be user-friendly for everyone and carries a better value per liter than its 5-gallon bottle. The bottle can be found in major stores such as Lowe’s, Don Quijote and all military outlets.
