Mayor’s comment on HPD

Editor’s note: After repeated requests over a week from the Honolulu Star-Advertiser for an interview or comment, Mayor Kirk Caldwell’s office sent the following statement to the newspaper on Wednesday, days after the print deadline for this series:

“Our Honolulu police officers have dangerous jobs. They put their lives on the line every day for each and every one of us to ensure Honolulu continues being one of the safest big cities in the U.S. My heartfelt gratitude goes out to them and their families for keeping us safe. Having said that, no one is above the law, and law enforcement officers must be held to the highest standard possible. Any allegation of wrongdoing must be investigated to the full extent of the law.

“Domestic violence is unacceptable anywhere in our community. I appointed Loretta Sheehan, a strong community leader in ending domestic violence, to the Honolulu Police Commission and recently launched a Safe on Scene pilot project with HPD and the Domestic Violence Action Center to respond jointly to domestic violence crime scenes.”

— Mayor Kirk Caldwell

Domestic violence is far from the only bad act of HPD officers people are complaining about. Caldwell doesn’t seem to grasp the magnitude of the problem here.
