A 36-year-old visitor from South Korea died Sunday after he was found floating face-down in the ocean in front of the Sheraton Kaanapali in Lahaina.
The man, identified as Jong Kwan Lee, entered the water near Black Rock to snorkel. At about 10:25 a.m., a bystander noticed Lee floating unresponsive in shallow water.
Two witnesses pulled Lee from the water and performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation until firefighters and paramedics arrived.
Lee was pronounced dead at the scene.
An autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death.
It was the second apparent drowning on Maui in three days. On Friday, a 58-year-old Lahaina man, Jamie Ceon, was pulled unresponsive from the water off D.T. Fleming Beach Park in Kapalua. He could not be revived.
Road closes after crash downs power line
A traffic crash Sunday on Hawaii island felled a power line on Kawaihae Road, prompting police to close the road at the 60-mile marker.
The road was expected to reopen late Sunday evening, according to police. Traffic was being rerouted through Ohina Street and Mahua Street.
The accident was reported at 4:46 p.m.
