Honolulu police are investigating an assault in Kalihi Sunday morning that sent a 55- to 65-year-old man to the hospital in critical condition.

The Emergency Medical Services Department said paramedics responded to the intersection of Dillingham Boulevard and Kalihi Street at about 4:49 a.m. and took the man to a trauma center.

A witness told paramedics that the suspect fled the scene.

@kennysmith, How do you know he is a vet? Do you know the identity of this person? Over a year ago a vet was jumped along Kalihi St. between bus stops, robbed and got beat up pretty bad. Wonder if it the same vet and the perps that got away that time came back to troll the area and rob again. Was early in the morning the last time too! What makes me think it may be the same people that are doing this, the vet that was robbed last time was carrying cash after pay day, for pay da rent! Stupid younger people on social security still do not use their heads. They keep the money in the wallet! Vets need to keep the money in the bank and use checks, that will reduce the chances of being mugged! Every time these muggers get lucky with a vet or another early riser headed to the VA early with money in the wallet, they will repeat their actions of mugging on social security payday knowing people carry money! VA programs and other programs for elders and disabled need to begin later in the morning to allow for travel time so as not to put people at increased risk of these incidents. HandiVan needs to accommodate ALL people with disabilities and not just those people that use durable medical equipment, or face the ADA suits necessary to begin public transportation as it is supposed to be under the letter of the law. Not to do so is being culpable in these acts if these people qualify for public transport and have been stranded by para transit.
