UH basketball game to be on TV only if enough tickets are sold

The University of Hawaii's Collegeinsider.com Tournament basketball game against Air Force Wednesday night will not be shown on local TV unless ticket sales hit 6,500, athletic director Ben Jay said today.

Jay said UH is in discussions with Oceanic Time Warner Cable about carrying the game if ticket sales hit 6,500, which is the estimated break even point.

"We're not going to televise this until ticket sales hit 6,500," Jay told the Star-Advertiser this morning.

Jay said the decision to underwrite one or two home games for UH after its first-round loss in the Big West Tournament was based upon the players.

"I think they would like the opportunity to play another game," Jay said.

Speaking later at the Honolulu Quarterback Club, Jay added, "It really came down to our student athletes, to give them the experience of playing in the postseason

"After watching that game last week in Anaheim (UH's loss to UC Irvine in the Big West Tournament) I knew that's not the way our kids wanted to end the season. This gives them a chance for redemption."

The financial goal is to at least break even, Jay said.

Jay said he would have to let Oceanic known by Wednesday morning if they will be allowed to broadcast the game.

Hawaii hosts Air Force at the Stan Sheriff Center at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the first round. Air Force (17-13) will be playing without the Mountain West's leading scorer, Michael Lyons (17.7) who tore a medial meniscus in his right knee in the conference tournament.

Tickets sales to season ticket holders began Sunday night and the public sale begins today at 5:00 p.m. (online only) and at 9:00 a.m. at the box office Tuesday morning.

should be the same for all UH sports. If no one attends the game why watch it on TV - free up the air time for other programming. Even students aren't supporting and they can go for free...

Based on the premise that the postseason supposed to be a reward for a successful regular season, I don't think UH deserves any postseason play. I am however happy for the players. It's their blood, sweat and tears that make this team what it is. I just hope UH doesn't use this tournament to argue that Arnold is doing a good job and has had a successful season. This tournament was basically given to UH by Riley Wallace, not earned. Good luck against Air Force.

Nice try but you can't separate the team from the players and the team is from UH.

So you think they deserve to go to the postseason based on the rationale that the postseason is supposed to be a reward for good regular season play? You have to admit it devalues the traditional meaning of postseason play right?

no giggle on you this tournament is to help teams that got snubbed by the ncaa or nit selection committee it helps them continue on playing, riley understands about getting snubbed like he did a few years ago when uh had a 23-8 record with alike smith and a.c. carter they won the classic tournament with wins over bob knights Indiana team Kansas and another top name school to win the tournament and uh got snubbed from being picked by the ncca tournament when they had a good rpi rating so that's why this tournament is also for winners. of course being a phoney you would not know that.

teams get snubbed by the NCAA and NIT because they're minor league and don't belong in post season play. That's why loser Gibby had to have UH buy their way into a joke of a tournament...giggle

your comment shows that you like watching UH lose games. The only way UH can get into a post season tournament is by buying their way in...so sad
