Humpback whales dazzle beachgoers at Pipeline

By Star-Advertiser staff

Like a Photoshop image come to life, two humpback whales made a stunning appearance within a massive wave cresting off Oahu's North Shore on April 5.

Quick-fingered photographers and videographers were able to catch the surreal moment when the two whales — a mother and calf — became visible in the midst of a set of big waves.

The images went viral this week as Facebook fanatics, Instagrammers and news organizations from the Daily Mail to the Huffington Post exhausted the available supply of bad whale puns.

Why post a cropped photo? The original is cool because you can see how close to the shore the whales were.

Experiencing a moment like this is like an ephemeral ghost that will come back to haunt you in the nicest way for the rest of your life. I spoke to a lifeguard who saw this ... now he is haunted ... and blessed.
