Maui woman ordered to repay welfare benefits

WAILUKU >> A 42-year-old Maui woman has been ordered to repay welfare benefits authorities say she received while working.

Edelmira Salayes Araiza of Kihei was accused of collecting nearly $30,000 in welfare benefits while also receiving income from her grocery clerk job, cleaning business and rental unit.

The Maui News reports Araiza also was ordered to perform 200 hours of community service as part of the sentence imposed Friday.

Araiza said through a Spanish interpreter that she did not know what she was doing.

Second Circuit Judge Rhonda Loo said Araiza “must speak some English” at her job.

Authorities say Araiza used an electronic benefits card about 1,000 times between 2009 and 2013.

Araiza was ordered by the judge to repay at least $100 a month.
