LAKE CLEAR, N.Y. >> New York state police say a small plane has crashed in the Adirondack Mountains, leaving four people dead in the fiery wreckage.

State police and the Federal Aviation Administration said Saturday the Piper PA-46 plane went down around 6:30 p.m. Friday a half-mile northwest of the Adirondack Airport in Lake Clear. It’s about 50 miles south of the Canadian border.

The identities of the dead have not been released.

Officials don’t know the cause of the crash. Franklin County Sheriff Kevin Mulverhill tells WPTZ-TV he doesn’t know whether the six-seat plane was taking off or landing when it crashed.

The FAA is investigating. State police say the National Transportation Safety Board is also en route. The NTSB hasn’t immediately responded to a message asking about the crash.
