Hawaii center Megan Huff (31) shoots over Long Beach State guard Alex Sanchez (3) during the first half of a women's college basketball game between the Long Beach State 49ers and the Hawaii Rainbow Wahine on Thursday, January 29, 2015 at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Hawaii’s depth chart took a hit Wednesday with sophomore Megan Huff’s decision to leave the volleyball team and concentrate on playing basketball for the Rainbow Wahine.

Huff, who is on basketball scholarship, had been used in a reserve role, backing up junior Nikki Taylor on the right side. She was on volleyball scholarship last fall then moved to basketball scholarship in December after volleyball season was done.

“I just want to say thank you to volleyball for the support I experienced through my freshman and sophomore years,” Huff said in a statement released by the school.. “But, I had to make one of the toughest decisions of my life to focus on one sport to better my future.”

The 6-foot-3 Huff made an immediate impact in basketball where the center was voted the Big West’s Sixth Player of the Year and named to the all-freshman team. She scored in double figures six times, leading Hawaii in scoring in four games and in rebounds five times.

“Megan meant a lot to the volleyball program, so we are disappointed in her decision,” Hawaii coach Dave Shoji said. “But, she is doing what she feels she needs to do to further her athletic career and we wish her the best.”

This season in volleyball, Huff played sparing in eight sets for No. 12 Hawaii (8-1) with seven total kills and one block. .
