Hawaii automobile dealers selling Toyota, Nissan, Honda and Subaru models are bracing for the impact the automakers’ production shutdown will have in the coming weeks and months.

Japan’s automakers are among the manufacturing industries that have halted production due to the magnitude 9.0 earthquake, resulting tsunami and ongoing aftershocks.

Tony Honda and Nissan, part of Tony Hawaii Automotive Group Ltd., gets shipments of several models from Japan "once or twice a month," said Stan Masamitsu, president. "We probably won’t feel the effects for a month or two," and right now, "we don’t have a dire shortage of anything."

Among Nissan models, the Cube, Juke, 370Z, Quest, Rogue and Murano are shipped from Japan. Of Hondas, Tony Group receives the Insight, Civic Hybrid, CR-V, CR-Z and Fit models from Japan.

"I don’t know what their ability is to catch up" once production resumes, Masamitsu said, "but I can’t emphasize enough that we’re not that high on the priority list of what they need to be concerned with right now."

Servco Pacific Inc. operates four Toyota dealerships and is the Toyota distributor for all of Hawaii. Servco receives its vehicles directly from Japan. Mainland dealerships receive inventory from Toyota Motor Corp. North America.

The shutdown of Toyota plants in Japan at least through tomorrow will not immediately affect the availability of Toyota vehicles in Hawaii, Servco officials said.

"We have several months’ supply of vehicles in Hawaii," said Mark Fukunaga, Servco CEO. "This disaster has touched all of us and we send our deepest condolences to the people of Japan. We’ve been in contact with all of our business partners, including Toyota, Subaru and Suzuki, and we’re prepared to support them in any way we can."
