Tip leads to fugitive’s Waikiki arrest
State sheriff’s deputies arrested fugitive Kevin N. Pacheco at about noon yesterday in the lobby of a Waikiki hotel and took him to the Queen’s Medical Center after he complained of injuries after his capture.
Pacheco was arrested at the Ocean Resort Hotel on Paoakalani Avenue after deputies were tipped off that he was staying there under an alias, said Clayton Frank, director of the state Department of Public Safety.
Pacheco tried to flee from about eight or nine deputies and was tackled in the lobby, Frank said.
Frank said he had no information that would indicate Pacheco was hit by bullets as he fled from deputies trying to arrest him in Waipahu yesterday.
Deputies said they shot at Pacheco after he drove a car toward one of them. Frank said seven or eight shots were fired by one of two officers at the Waipahu scene. The other officer did not discharge his weapon, he said.
Deputies later found the car dotted with bullet holes and abandoned about a mile away.
A state judge issued a warrant for Pacheco’s arrest last month after a grand jury returned an indictment charging him with eight drug offenses.
Suspect in Palolo home arson sought
Police are asking for the public’s help in finding an arsonist who set fire to a home in Palolo on Wednesday afternoon.
Investigators determined an accelerant was used to start the fire at 2203 Ahe Place at about 5 p.m.
Anyone who may have been in the area and witnessed the fire or who has information is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 955-8300 or *CRIME on a cellular phone.
Fire Department spokesman Capt. Terry Seelig said damage to the home was estimated at $250,000. The cause has not been determined.
Poamoho fire does $250,000 damage
Fire destroyed a community center in Poamoho Camp on Thursday night, resulting in $250,000 in damage.
The fire was reported at 8:05 p.m. About 35 firefighters responded, and when the first company arrived on scene, the fire was fully involved, Capt. Terry Seelig said. The fire was extinguished at 10:05 p.m.
The corrugated metal roof of the old, wooden building collapsed onto the burning building, requiring the roofing material to be removed and the building to be pulled apart to extinguish the fires.
Man dies of injuries from crash
A 38-year-old Haleiwa man died at the Queen’s Medical Center on Wednesday night from injuries after an accident on Nimitz Highway.
The crash happened at about 9:46 p.m. on Nimitz Highway at the intersection with the access road to the Nimitz Center at 1130 Nimitz Highway.
This is Oahu’s 36th traffic fatality this year, compared with 37 at this time last year.

Car plunges 150 feet, killing driver
A 20-year-old Kona man died early yesterday morning in a single-car crash in Kailua-Kona.
Big Island police identified the man as Chayson K.E. Matsuoka.
Matsuoka was driving a 1999 two-door Toyota sedan when it ran off the road and tumbled 150 feet down an embankment, police said.
The accident occurred at 12:48 a.m. on Palani Road just west of Konalani Street.
Matsuoka, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the car. Fire rescue personnel transported him to Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:05 a.m.
His passenger, a 35-year-old woman, was also taken to the hospital, where she was treated and released.
Police said speed and alcohol were involved in the crash.
This was the Big Island’s 19th fatality this year compared with 13 at the same time last year.
Truck flips, tossing man to his death
A 22-year-old Kilauea man died early yesterday in a single-car crash in Kalihiwai, Kauai.
He was identified as Alexander Texeira.
At about 12:35 a.m. Texeira was traveling northbound in a pickup truck on Kuhio Highway near Mile Marker 25. Police said the truck went off the roadway, climbed an embankment and flipped over several times. Texeira was thrown from the truck.
He was not wearing a seat belt.
Paramedics transported Texeira to Wilcox Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
Texeira’s death is Kauai’s 10th traffic-related fatality this year, compared with six at the same time last year.
