A wildfire on the slopes of Mauna Kea has burned 1,387 acres in 10 days but is now 80 percent contained, state officials said last night.

The fire, which started Aug. 22, has been charring brush in the Pohakuloa Training Area, the Mauna Kea forest reserve, and the Mauna Kea State Recreation Area, which remains closed, according to the Department of Land and Natural Resources.

Federal, state and county firefighters have been working together to douse the blaze.
