Man apparently drowns off Mokuleia

A 56-year-old North Shore man apparently drowned yesterday while paddleboarding in waters off Mokuleia.

Police said the man went paddleboarding about 1:30 p.m. with family and friends who then found him face down in the water about 2:15 p.m.

Bryan Cheplic, Honolulu Emergency Services Department spokesman, said bystanders pulled the man out of the water fronting 68-285 Crozier Loop and gave him CPR until firefighters and paramedics arrived.

Paramedics took the man in critical condition to Wahiawa General Hospital, where he died.

Autopsy sought in suspected drowning

Big Island police have requested an autopsy to determine the cause of death of a 52-year-old Kona man who apparently drowned Friday night off Captain Cook.

Bruce Berard of Kailua-Kona was found unresponsive when police responded to an emergency call at 10:15 p.m. Friday.

Berard was night diving with companions when they found him unresponsive in the water.

Berard was taken to Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:47 a.m. Saturday.

Teen faces attempted murder charge

Prosecutors charged a 19-year-old Palolo man with attempted murder in connection with the stabbing of an 18-year-old relative and roommate on Ahe Street Saturday morning.

Curtis Etuale was being held on $50,000 bail and appeared in Honolulu District Court yesterday.

Police said the Etuale and the other man argued over the use of a room and Etuale grabbed a knife and stabbed the victim several times. Neighbors intervened and Etuale fled, but officers located him across the street where he was arrested.

The victim was taken to the Queen’s Medical Center in serious condition.

ID theft leads to multiple charges for 3

Hawaii County police said an ID left in a condominium apartment led to the arrest of two men and a woman who were charged over the weekend with burglary and drug offenses.

Kona police began investigating after three units at a condominium on Alii Drive in Kailua-Kona were burglarized Friday.

In one of the units, police found items from one of the other units, along with drug paraphernalia and identification belonging to a Kailua-Kona resident who didn’t live in the condo.

While police were still at the scene, Sarah Duarte, 19, returned in a pickup truck driven by Scott Anderson, 43, of Kailua-Kona. Vice officers obtained a search warrant for the truck and found drugs, paraphernalia and weapons. Anderson was arrested on suspicion of drug and weapons offenses and arrested and charged on a bench warrant for failure to appear in court.

Police arrested Duarte and Chauncey Chow, 23, of Kailua-Kona after learning that they had been staying in the condo without permission.

On Saturday, police charged Anderson with carrying a deadly weapon, violating terms of supervised release, second-degree meth trafficking, three counts of promoting a dangerous drug and three counts of possessing drug paraphernalia. His bail is $136,300.

Chow and Duarte were each charged Saturday with promoting a dangerous drug, promoting a detrimental drug and possessing drug paraphernalia. On Sunday, Chow also was charged with three counts of burglary. Chow’s bail is $96,000. Duarte’s bail was set at $4,500. Police are continuing an investigation into additional burglary charges against Duarte.
