Observe, sample meat-free cuisine

"Vegetarian Cooking Made Easy" will be presented at 10:15 a.m. Saturday at Liliha Public Library.

Alyssa Moreau, a culinary instructor at Kapiolani Community College’s Continuing Education program, will prepare three dishes and offer samples of each.

Moreau contributed to the KCC cookbook "A Dash of Aloha: Healthy Hawaiian Cuisine and Lifestyle."

Join Whole Foods for its birthday

Wish Whole Foods Kahala a happy second birthday with cake and ice cream, plus cooking demos and visits from local vendors and farmers, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Laniakea YWCA hosts wine tasting

Join members of Laniakea YWCA on Sept. 23 for an evening of boutique wines and pupu prepared by Laniakea staff.

The wine tasting is part of a weeklong series of events during Open House at Laniakea, formerly known as Richards Street YWCA. Chef Shayne Kobatake will offer samples from his new menu, including Salmon Dynamite, capped with a caramelized mixture of masago, crab and shrimp on cold tofu-watercress salad and unagi glaze, and a Grilled Vegetable Panini on focaccia with creamy gorgonzola pesto spread.

The tasting runs 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at 1040 Richards St. Tickets are $30 advance ($35 at the door) and $25 for YWCA members. Call 695-2639.

Sample spirits at annual benefit

Enjoy wine, beer and sake pairings at the Honolulu Japanese Chamber of Commerce’s annual "Chopsticks & Wine" fundraiser, set for 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 6 at Sheraton Waikiki Hotel.

Food will be provided by Shokudo Japanese Restaurant & Bar, Wolfgang’s Steakhouse, Beachhouse at the Moana, Mariposa, Bali Steak & Seafood, Kai Market, Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse and ZenShu.

KFC seeks fresh look for Colonel

KFC is seeking a modern portrait of Colonel Harland Sanders, founder of the fried chicken chain.

But before putting brush to canvas, take note: The portrait must be completed using special paint blended with the franchise’s famed 11 herbs and spices.

Now through the end of the month, artists can upload their sketches of the colonel to www.kfc.com/portrait, or send them via e-mail to kfc.publicrelations@kfc.com.

The winning artist will not only receive a commission to paint the new portrait, but $1,100 ($100 for each herb and spice) as well.
