For the first time that local film industry officials can recall, a Hawaii freeway will be shut down for a movie project.

The producers of the big-budget film "Battleship" will close the Kaneohe-bound lanes of H-3 freeway from 4:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday.

It won’t be the first time a Hawaii freeway was used for a film, but the use of the H-2 freeway by "Hawaii Five-0" in the late 1970s doesn’t count as a closure because it wasn’t yet opened for traffic.

"It was finished, but not open," said veteran Hawaii locations manager Randy Spangler, who worked on that production. "We had a shoot-out out there."

Film and television productions often use active freeways on the mainland.

In granting the permit, Hawaii transportation officials said no freeway here had ever been shut down, said Georja Skinner, administrator for the state Creative Industries Division, which oversees the Hawaii Film Office.

"It is an important film for Hawaii and a pivotal scene for the film," Skinner said. "We don’t want to make this a regular habit because we don’t want to inconvenience the public, but this film, and film productions in general, are great for Hawaii so we have to balance things."

Skinner could not say how much the "Battleship" producers are paying to use H-3. State transportation officials were on furlough yesterday and did not return calls for comment.

The producers of the new "Hawaii Five-0" also considered filming on H-3 Monday, but that’s as far as it got, a spokeswoman said.

Earlier this week, "Battleship" scheduled shooting at Magic Island from Thursday afternoon until this morning, but postponed use of the location. No new dates have been announced.

"Battleship" began shooting in Hawaii last month and is scheduled for six weeks in the islands. It stars Taylor Kitsch, Liam Neeson, Brooklyn Decker, Alexander Skarsgard and Rihanna. The film, which reportedly will cost $200 million, is being directed by Peter Berg.
