Woman hurt in aborted suicide pact

A 48-year-old Kalihi woman who had made a suicide pact with her 79-year-old mother early yesterday morning is believed to have stabbed the older woman in the throat, but could not go through with the pact, police said.

Instead, the daughter called her sibling for help, police said.

The mother was taken by ambulance to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Her daughter is being investigated on suspicion of second-degree attempted murder, but she has not yet been arrested, police said.

Bicyclist struck by vehicle is injured

A vehicle struck a 49-year-old male bicyclist at about 7:42 p.m. yesterday at Dillingham Boulevard and Middle Street.

Police dispatch reported at 8:13 p.m. that the bicyclist was in critical condition.

The Dillingham offramp of the airport viaduct was shut down. Police also blocked traffic on the southbound lanes of Middle Street, preventing traffic from going east on Dillingham.

Man killed on H-2 identified

A man killed when he was struck by a car on the H-2 freeway Monday night has been identified as Army Spc. David Jernigan, 22.

A native of Zephyrhills, Fla., Jernigan was assigned to the 70th Engineer Company, 65th Engineer Battalion, 130th Engineer Brigade, 8th Theater Sustainment Command, based at Schofield Barracks, said Lt. Col. Matthew Garner, public affairs officer for the 8th Theater Sustainment Command.

Police said Jernigan, who was living in Wahiawa, hit the median barrier with his car while going toward town about a quarter-mile north of the Kamehameha Highway onramp at 10:50 p.m.

He stopped his vehicle, then jumped into the Wahiawa-bound lanes, where he was hit by a 2007 Volkswagen Jetta driven by a Mililani woman. The woman, 25, suffered minor injuries and was treated at Wahiawa General Hospital.

Police said it is unclear why Jernigan tried to cross the freeway but believe he had been drinking.

The incident is being investigated jointly by the police and the Army.

Jernigan had been in the Army for three years, Garner said. He was deployed to Iraq from 2008 to 2009. He was awarded the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Iraqi Campaign Medal with Campaign Star, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the Army Service Ribbon.

Jernigan is survived by his wife and two daughters.
