Aiona unveils affordable housing plan

Republican gubernatorial candidate James “Duke” Aiona is unveiling his affordable housing plan.

The proposal from the incumbent lieutenant governor, released Monday, would restore state funding for affordable housing developments, expedite approval of housing projects on state-owned lands and accelerate repairs of public housing complexes.

Aiona also would expand programs that teach renters how to become homeowners, continue awarding homesteads to Native Hawaiians and provide more assistance to homeless people in emergency shelters.

The lieutenant governor faces Democrat Neil Abercrombie in the Nov. 2 general election.
