Man held in apartment burglary

A 41-year-old man allegedly burglarized his ex-girlfriend’s Makiki apartment over a six-month period while she was away on a trip, police said.

The woman, 41, said she returned from the trip Wednesday to find that someone had entered her Green Street apartment and some of her belongings were missing, police said. Witnesses said they saw the ex-boyfriend coming and going from the unit during her absence, police said.

The suspect returned to the unit Thursday when she was there. Police were called and arrested him.

Makiki fire was arson, officials say

Honolulu fire investigators said a Makiki fire that left eight people homeless Thursday was deliberately set.

The fire began at about 7:05 a.m. in a vacant second-story apartment in the five-unit structure at 910 Piikoi St. The fire was largely confined to one unit, but others suffered fire or water damage.

No one was injured, and the fire was under control by 7:24 a.m. Damage to the building and its contents was set at $130,000.

Injured pedestrian, 65, improves

A pedestrian critically injured in Pearl City on Thursday night has improved to serious condition at the Queen’s Medical Center.

Police said a Honda Civic traveling makai on Kaahumanu Street hit a 65-year-old Waianae man at 7:36 p.m. near Moanalua Road. The pedestrian was not in a marked crosswalk, police said. The man was taken to the Queen’s Medical Center with two broken legs and internal injuries, police said. He was later upgraded to serious condition.

The Honda driver, a 48-year-old Waipahu man, was not injured.
