Motorcyclist’s death makes 59 traffic fatalities this year

A motorcyclist who died from injuries sustained Sept. 19 in a crash in Aiea has been recorded as Oahu’s 59th traffic fatality of the year.

Frank Knight, 47, of Aiea died Nov. 19 from complications with head injuries he received in the crash, the city Medical Examiner’s Office said today.

A spokeswoman for the Honolulu Police Department also confirmed the death.

The crash happened on Aiea Heights Drive near Holo Place about 6:20 p.m. Knight apparently lost control of his motorcycle and crashed into an embankment.

The Oahu fatality total this year has already surpassed the 55 recorded in all of 2009.

Victim in critical condition after assault in Kakaako

A man in his 40s was hospitalized in critical condition yesterday afternoon after an apparent assault in Kakaako.

Paramedics were called to Ahui Street near John Dominis Restaurant at 12:58 p.m., said Bryan Cheplic, city Department of Emergency Services spokesman. They took the man to the hospital in critical condition.

Man seriously hurt in crash at Moanalua Freeway exit

A man in his 40s remained in critical condition at the Queen’s Medical Center after the SUV he was driving crashed yesterday at the Kamehameha Highway offramp of the Moanalua Freeway.

Police said the 1995 green Ford Explorer was leaving the freeway when it veered to the right and up an embankment.

The vehicle hit three concrete pillars under Aiea Access Road, fell back onto the roadway, hit the guardrail on the left shoulder of the road and came to rest in the far right lane.

The man was treated at the scene, then taken in critical condition to the hospital at 6:09 a.m., said Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city Department of Emergency Services.

Police Traffic Division officers said the man had serious head injuries.

The crash, which happened at dawn on a road wet from rain, caused major damage to the driver’s side and roof of the vehicle, police traffic officials said.

Access to Kamehameha Highway from the offramp was blocked off for a few hours.
