No. 2 Oak Hill in ‘Iolani field

Powerhouse Oak Hill Academy heads another elite field in the ‘Iolani Classic boys basketball tournament, which tips off Thursday at ‘Iolani School.

Oak Hill (Va.), ranked No. 2 in the ESPN Fab 50, has a lineup of Division I college recruits: Quinn Cook, a 6-foot-1 guard en route to Duke; 6-5 guard Ben McLemore (Kansas); 6-8 forward Sidiki Johnson (Arizona), and 6-9 forward Daniel Gomis (Oregon State).

Montverde Academy (Fla.), ranked No. 7 in the ESPN poll, is led by guard Kasey Hill and forwards Steve Missi (6-8) and Paul Gombwer (6-7).

The two favorites are joined by six other mainland squads: Mount Vernon (N.Y.), a regular visitor, Lexington Catholic (Ky.), Wheeler (Ga.), Mason County (Ky.), Dr. Phillips (Fla.) and Tsinghua (China).

On Thursday, ‘Iolani plays Radford at 3:30 p.m., followed by Dr. Phillips vs. AOP (5 p.m.), Wheeler vs. Mililani (6:30), and Oak Hill vs. Moanalua (8).

The 16-team tourney concludes Tuesday. The slam-dunk contest will follow Saturday night’s games.

 

Pete Smith Classic on tap

The annual Pete Smith Classic tips off Thursday with one team from Australia (Melbourne Grammer), another from Canada (Seaquam) and three from the neighbor islands.

Host Kalaheo will meet defending Division II state champion Pahoa in Thursday’s opener at 8 p.m.

 

German thunder

Fans who watched the slam-dunk contest at the AOP Hoop Classic on Saturday were treated to some German aerodynamics, courtesy of the host team.

AOP junior Moritz Krume, a 6-foot-6 junior, won the competition against ‘Iolani’s Gabriel Vega, Farrington’s J.P. Saycon and fellow Dolphin Micah Dunhour.
