Pair badly hurt in Kona mo-ped crash

A young man and a teenage girl suffered "multiple traumatic injuries" Saturday night in Kailua-Kona when their mo-ped hit a Ford F-350 truck, Big Island firefighters said.

The truck was heading south on Queen Kaahumanu Highway and making a left turn onto Kealakehe Parkway at about 6:30 p.m. when it collided with the mo-ped, driven by a man in his 20s, firefighters said.

The mo-ped driver and the female, teenage passenger were found unconscious in the intersection of Queen Kaahumanu Highway and Kealakehe Parkway.

Drivers were assisting the injured mo-ped riders when firefighters and paramedics arrived. The pair was taken in critical condition to Kona Hospital. The driver of the truck was uninjured.

Officer drives over, breaks man’s foot

Honolulu police have initiated a negligent-injury case after a subsidized police vehicle ran over a pedestrian’s foot Saturday night on Pahoa Avenue.

According to police, a 22-year-old man was walking north on the shoulder of Pahoa Avenue near 21st Avenue when he attempted to cross the street and was struck by the officer’s vehicle, a 2003 Mustang, which was heading west on Pahoa.

Police said the left side of the car’s fender struck the pedestrian; the pedestrian’s left foot was run over by at least one of the tires. He was taken to the Queen’s Medical Center with a broken foot.

The incident occurred in clear but dimly lit conditions.
