Would-be bank robber causes bomb scare on Maui

MAUI POLICE DEPARTMENT
Maui police released this surveillance photo of a bank robbery suspect who left a suspicious object at First Hawaiian Bank at 20 Kaahumanu Ave. yesterday.

Maui police are looking for a man who caused a bomb scare during an attempted bank robbery in Kahului.

The man entered the First Hawaiian Bank at 20 Kaahumanu Ave. at about 11:30 a.m. yesterday and handed an employee a note demanding that money be put into a bag, police said.

The robber didn’t get any money, but he left a suspicious device on the counter and said something about blowing up the bank, police said.

Authorities closed the bank and a bomb squad diffused the threat.

The FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are assisting in the investigation, Maui police said.

Police described the man as 6 feet tall with a slim build, wearing a camouflage jacket and camouflage pants.
