Adult tutors needed
Hawaii Literacy’s Adult Literacy Program is seeking volunteer tutors to teach reading and writing to adults. An orientation session will be held Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon at Waipahu Civic Center, 94-275 Mokuola St. Call 537-6706 to let organizers know you will attend.
More food pulled from recall list
More than a dozen food items have been removed from a state list of recalled products manufactured by First Commercial Kitchen LLC (see related stories below).
The revised list follows a review of records by the state Department of Health, noting some of the information provided by First Commercial was outdated.
The department said those removed from the list of recalled products include:
» Arturo’s Hot Sauces: Maui, Lanai, Kauai, Big Island and Oahu; Makai Chili Peppa Water; Nitro 3, 7, 10; Red Shark; Chipotle BBQ; Hawaiian Passion Teriyaki Sauce; Hawaiian Passion; Sweet Pineapple Hot Sauce; Mango Delicious; Mango Vicious; Shelf Stable Salsas Red Medium.
» Kabuki Restaurant: Yakitori Sauce, Batayaki Sauce.
» Natural Edge: Noni Juice.
» Poke Stop: Remoulade, Creamy Ahi Dressing, Soy Lime Dressing, Pickled Onion Tartar Sauce, Teri Sauce.
» Wing Coffee Company: Thick Soy Sauce, Sweet & Sour Sauce, Plum Sauce, Hoisin Sauce, and Black Bean Garlic.

Army clarifies training plans on Big Island
The Army says it miscommunicated its Big Island helicopter training plans and that it doesn’t plan to expand the land area it uses for training.
U.S. Army Garrison Hawaii said in a statement Friday that the problem stemmed from graphics in an environmental assessment the Army prepared for its training proposal. The graphics, which depict flight paths, were labeled "project area" on the map’s legend and caused some to believe the Army wanted to use more land for training, the Army said.
The Army intends to train with helicopters at Pohakuloa, but use the same three landing zones on Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa that it used in 2004.
Kauai project will be subject of hearing
The state will hold a public hearing today on efforts to avoid and minimize harm to nene and other endangered birds during the planned construction of a new development at Kauai Lagoons Resort in Lihue.
The Department of Land and Natural Resources will conduct the hearing at Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School to discuss a Habitat Conservation Plan prepared by developers.
The developers plan to build 705 condominium and time-share units, 65 single-family house lots, a new golf clubhouse and a 27-hole golf course complex.
Molokai library plans for closure
Molokai Public Library will be closed beginning Feb. 14 for an undetermined time while workers replace the carpet.
During the closure, limited library services will be available at the carport behind the building. Hours will be Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
DVD movies and CDs will not be available, and staff will not be able to collect fines or fees during the closure.
