Cannon fire for ceremony

The Army is advising residents and businesses around Fort Shafter that cannon fire will be heard in the area late Monday morning for a change-of-command ceremony. Lt. Gen. Francis Wiercinski is taking over from Lt. Gen. Benjamin Mixon as commander of U.S. Army Pacific. The cannon fire will begin at about 11:30 a.m. and last about one minute. People are advised to turn off car alarms, which could be set off by the vibrations.

Town meeting looks at transportation

A community town meeting on transportation and traffic issues will be held tomorrow at the Pearlridge Elementary School cafeteria.

Sponsored by various state senators and representatives, the meeting will have presentations from state and city officials on various projects, including improvements to Kamehameha Highway, freeway resurfacing, Moanalua Road’s extension, repaving projects and rail updates.

The meeting is from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Call 586-8455.

Flags honor last U.S. WWI veteran

U.S. and state flags flew at half-staff yesterday in honor of Frank W. Buckles, the last American veteran of World War I, according to the office of Gov. Neil Abercrombie.

Buckles was buried yesterday with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery.

Buckles enlisted in the Army at 16 after lying about his age. He died last month at his home in Charles Town, W.Va., at age 110.

Before the burial, Buckles’ body lay in repose at the memorial amphitheater at Arlington.
