Bicyclist critically hurt in collision

A man was critically injured when his bicycle was struck by a car in Kapahulu on Friday night.

The bicyclist was traveling southbound on Monsarrat Avenue around 8:20 p.m. when he was struck by a Toyota Yaris attempting to make a left turn onto Campbell Avenue, police said.

The bicyclist, who was thrown from his bicycle, was taken to the Queen’s Medical Center in critical condition. Neither the driver of the Yaris, a 49-year-old Pearl City man, nor his passenger, a 45-year-old Kaneohe woman, was injured.

The bicyclist was not wearing a helmet or night lights.

It is not known if alcohol, drugs or speed were a factor in the crash.

The intersection was shut down for several hours as traffic officers investigated the scene.
