Cruise ship guest dies while snorkeling on Big Island

Hawaii County authorities have ordered an autopsy into the death today of a cruise ship passenger who lost consciousness while snorkeling at Kahaluu Beach Park.

Kenneth Clem, 65, of Humbolt, Texas, was snorkeling with his wife and friends when a lifeguard noticed he was face-down and not moving, Big Island police said. The lifeguard pulled him from the water and began cardiopulmonary resuscitation until fire rescue personnel arrived and continued efforts to revive him.

He was taken to Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly before noon.

Big Island police have classified the possible drowning as a coroner’s inquest.
