Oahu gas price just shy of record

The average price for a gallon of gas in Honolulu is just one penny below the all-time record yesterday while Maui set a new high.

AAA Daily Fuel Gauge reported the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gas in Honolulu is $4.38 a gallon, just 1 cent below the record of $4.39 set on July 29, 2008. The 2008 price is not adjusted for inflation.

Meanwhile, Wailuku topped its record gas price set last week with an average price of $4.86.

Statewide, the average price for regular gas was $4.48, up 2 cents from Sunday and 6 cents higher than last week. The price is about 93 cents higher than what gas cost a year ago.

The highest Hawaii average price for a gallon of gas was about $4.51 set on July 24, 2008.

Hilo’s average price of $4.49 is still well below its record price of $4.66 on July 28, 2008.

Gasoline pump prices climbed to a national average of $3.83 per gallon, according to AAA, Wright Express and Oil Price Information Service. Pump prices are above $4 per gallon in California, New York, Illinois, Connecticut, Washington, D.C., Hawaii and Alaska.

Correction: The statewide average price of gas was about 93 cents higher than last year. An earlier version of the story had an incorrect figure.

NEIGHBOR ISLANDS

Military units to travel on Big Island

Oahu-based military units will travel in a vehicle convoy from Kawaihae Harbor to Pohakuloa Training Area Thursday and Friday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. each day, U.S. Army Garrison Hawaii announced.

The convoy will travel on Akoni Pule-Queen Kaahumanu Highway, Waikoloa Road and the Mamalahoa Saddle Road Corridor.

The Pohakuloa Training Area Department of Army police are working closely with local authorities and military units to coordinate this activity. Motorists are advised to be alert and drive with care.

Salt Pond restrooms need repairs

The restrooms in the main pavilion at Salt Pond Beach Park on Kauai are temporarily closed because of a malfunction in the septic system.

The restrooms at the west end of the park remain open.

County Department of Public Works personnel are scheduled to make repairs today.

Parker Ranch to meet with commission

A request to rezone about 25 acres at Parker Ranch is to go before a planning commission this week.

The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reported yesterday ranch officials are asking the Leeward Planning Commission to rezone the land from a variety of zoning designations to a combination of commercial village and residential zoning.

The application was filed in September 2008.

Planners are scheduled to meet Thursday morning.

Pet helpers needed

The Hawaiian Humane Society is seeking pet foster care volunteers to provide temporary home care for animals eligible for adoption. The society provides food, medical care and basic supplies.
