Man, 37, arrested in girl’s abduction

Police arrested a 37-year-old Ewa Beach man in the kidnapping of a 4-year-old girl who was playing with her brother in their backyard Monday afternoon.

Police say the girl’s brother saw the suspect reach over a chain-link fence and take her from the yard at an Ewa Beach home at about 5:30 p.m.

The girl’s father told his friends what happened, and one of them saw the suspect and the girl inside a nearby store.

Police arrested the suspect at a Fort Weaver Road address at about 7 p.m. on suspicion of kidnapping.

Student arrested in threat to teacher

A 14-year-old boy accused of threatening his teacher with a school desk was arrested on suspicion of terroristic threatening Monday at an unnamed Waipahu school.

Police said the teacher called for campus security. Police were called, and the boy was arrested without incident. He was released to his parents pending further investigation.

Man suspected in attempt to steal dog

A 37-year-old man has been arrested in the attempted theft of his ex-girlfriend’s dog in Haleiwa.

Police said the woman returned home at 9:14 p.m. Sunday and noticed her ex-boyfriend’s vehicle in her driveway. She searched her house and discovered her dog and several personal items were missing, police said.

Her roommate then noticed the man loading the dog into his vehicle. The woman was able to retrieve the dog.

Police arrested her ex-boyfriend Monday at 7 p.m. at his Haleiwa home on suspicion of burglary.

2 Kona men held in theft of copper

Two Kona men were in custody yesterday after their arrest on suspicion of stealing copper.

The men, age 31 and 48, were arrested Monday after personnel at a religious facility saw men trying to take copper material from a renovation project, police said.

The employees detained the suspects until police arrived.

Detectives linked the men to another incident of copper theft and also arrested them on suspicion of that offense.

Big Island sees fewer DUI arrests

Drunken-driving arrests in Hawaii County are down 11 percent for the first 16 weeks of the year, compared with the same point last year, police said.

Through Sunday police made 436 DUIarrests, compared with 490 during the same period last year. The Kona district had the most arrests with 181, and the South Hilo district had 161.

Major accidents are down 4 percent — 430 this year compared with 448 last year. There have been eight traffic fatalities this year compared with nine last year.
